Brussels, August 04, 2026 – The Europe Today: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed strong support for the coordinated response of Morocco and Spain to the recent mass migrant crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, underscoring the importance of close cooperation in managing migration and safeguarding regional stability.
In a message addressed to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, von der Leyen praised the joint efforts of the Moroccan and Spanish authorities in responding to the crisis and reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Morocco as a key strategic partner on migration management.
The European Commission President stressed the need for stronger protection of the EU’s external borders, enhanced coordination with partner countries, improved early warning mechanisms, and intensified efforts to combat migrant smuggling networks. She also highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive and coordinated European approach to irregular migration.
The statement came after a large-scale migrant crossing into Ceuta prompted an emergency response by Spanish authorities and renewed discussions within the European Union on migration policy and border management. EU interior ministers are expected to continue consultations on coordinated measures to address the situation.
