Ashgabat, August 12, 2026 — The Europe Today: President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov has emphasized the importance of international and regional cooperation to protect the Caspian Sea ecosystem and ensure its sustainable development.
In a congratulatory message to participants of the scientific and practical conference “Protection of the Caspian Sea Ecosystem: Regional Cooperation and Sustainable Development” on the occasion of Caspian Sea Day, the President described the Caspian Sea as a sea of peace, friendship and goodwill that has gained broad international recognition.
According to Turkmen state media, Berdimuhamedov highlighted the Caspian Sea’s unique natural characteristics, rich biodiversity, and significant economic and geopolitical importance, calling it an invaluable natural asset.
The President underscored Turkmenistan’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships aimed at improving the environmental condition of the Caspian Sea. He recalled that the First Caspian Environmental Forum, held in 2012 at the Avaza National Tourist Zone, demonstrated Turkmenistan’s initiatives and efforts to promote environmental cooperation in the region.
He also referred to the First Caspian Economic Forum, convened at Turkmenistan’s initiative on August 12, 2019, at Avaza. The forum, he said, created new opportunities for expanding trade and economic relations among the Caspian littoral states.
Berd Berdimuhamedov further highlighted the Sixth Caspian Summit, held in Ashgabat on June 29, 2022, describing it as an important milestone in strengthening cooperation among the Caspian Sea states. The summit identified key areas for further collaboration, he noted.
The Turkmen President stressed that safeguarding the Caspian Sea’s unique ecosystem, biodiversity, and rare species of flora and fauna remains among Turkmenistan’s key priorities. In this context, he described the Caspian Environmental Initiative promoted by Turkmenistan as an important step toward protecting the marine environment, consolidating joint efforts and preserving the Caspian Sea for future generations.
Berd Berdimuhamedov said the scientific and practical conference held in connection with Caspian Sea Day carries significant importance for the protection and scientific study of the sea’s natural resources, maintaining a favorable environmental balance and further strengthening friendly relations among the Caspian littoral states.
He wished the conference participants good health and success in their scientific and professional activities.
