Dushanbe, August 21, 2026 — The Europe Today: President of Tajikistan and Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon inspected the progress of construction works on the dam of the Rogun Hydropower Plant during his working visit to the facility on August 20.

The Rogun dam consists of a core, second- and third-stage transition filters, a lower support prism, an upper support prism, and upstream and downstream rockfill zones. Upon completion, the dam will reach a height of 335 metres, making it the highest rockfill dam in the world.

The dam will have a width of 1,800 metres at its base and 612 metres at the top, while the crest will be 20 metres wide. The total volume of material to be placed in the dam is estimated at 79 million cubic metres.

Construction activity at the site is continuing without interruption, with engineers, workers and modern heavy machinery operating around the clock.

Initial construction works on the dam were launched to an elevation of 1,050 metres above sea level. According to the information provided to the President, the foundation of the dam core has been completed using 293,446 cubic metres of compacted concrete. Foundation consolidation grouting has also been completed through 3,359 boreholes, while curtain grouting has been carried out through 125 boreholes with depths ranging from 44 to 149 metres.

During a previous meeting with engineers and construction workers at the Rogun plant, President Rahmon instructed that the dam be raised to an elevation of 1,155 metres above sea level in 2026 and that the reservoir be filled to 1,140 metres.

The President was informed that construction of the dam is proceeding in accordance with the approved plans and his instructions. The dam has already been raised to the 1,155-metre elevation ahead of schedule, while reservoir filling is expected to reach 1,140 metres above sea level in the near term.

The Rogun Hydropower Plant is being constructed in accordance with environmental, technical and safety standards and is regarded as one of Tajikistan’s major national infrastructure projects. Thousands of workers are engaged in construction activities around the clock, contributing to efforts to complete the hydropower facility within the established timeframe.

Rahmon also inspected construction works from an elevation of 1,300 metres above sea level near the exit of Transport Tunnel No. 9 leading toward the Rogun dam.

He was informed that construction works in the dam area are being conducted around the clock in two shifts, with more than 160 units of modern machinery and equipment deployed at the site each day.

During his meeting with the plant’s engineering and technical personnel, Rahmon stressed that quality and strict compliance with international standards must remain the top priorities in the construction of the dam.

He emphasized that the large-scale construction effort represents a long-term national project intended to serve future generations and contribute to the development of independent Tajikistan.

President Rahmon was accompanied during his visit by Prime Minister of Tajikistan Qohir Rasulzoda, other government officials and heads of relevant ministries and agencies.
