Ottawa, August 23, 2026 – The Europe Today: Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on a broad range of goods imported from the United States starting September 8, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced, escalating a trade dispute between the two longtime economic partners.
Carney said the measures would match the latest US tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis and are intended to protect Canadian workers, farmers, businesses and industries from the impact of Washington’s new trade measures.
The Canadian tariffs will target a range of US sectors, including steel, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The measures will also cover products currently subject to US tariffs imposed under Sections 232 and 338 of American trade law.
The announcement follows the breakdown of trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington. The United States has imposed 50 percent tariffs on approximately US$20 billion worth of Canadian goods, prompting Canada to prepare a corresponding response.
Carney said Canada had sought a negotiated solution but would not accept terms that it considered unfair or harmful to the country’s economic interests. He indicated that Ottawa remained prepared to defend Canadian industries while pursuing broader efforts to diversify the country’s international trade relationships.
The escalating tariff measures have raised concerns over the economic impact on businesses and consumers in both countries, while further straining relations between the two major North American trading partners.
The new Canadian tariffs are scheduled to take effect on September 8, marking another significant escalation in the ongoing US-Canada trade dispute.
