Jakarta, September 8, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) has approved a bill to amend the country’s 2002 Broadcasting Law, paving the way for further discussions with the government.
Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad presided over the approval during a plenary session in Jakarta on Tuesday, following the submission of written views by eight political party factions.
“Does the honorable House approve the bill proposed by Commission I as a House initiative?” Dasco asked, prompting legislators to approve the proposed legislation.
One of the key amendments would increase the number of commissioners on the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) from nine to 11 members.
Commission I Deputy Chairman Dave Laksono said the proposed increase was intended to provide broader representation of interests within the KPI.
Under the proposed composition, seven commissioners would represent parliament, while one each would represent the government, the public, broadcasters and academia, Dave said.
The bill also proposes regulations governing over-the-top (OTT) digital media platforms, with the objective of establishing legal certainty and ensuring equal responsibilities across the rapidly evolving media ecosystem.
Dave emphasized that the proposed provisions were not intended to impose broader restrictions on OTT platforms, but rather to establish a clear, fair and proportionate regulatory framework in response to changes in the media landscape.
“The aim is not to expand restrictions on OTT platforms, but to establish clear, fair, and proportionate governance amid changes in the media ecosystem,” he said.
Following the House’s approval, the bill will proceed to further discussions with the Indonesian government before the legislative process is completed.
