New York, September 26, 2026 — The Europe Today: Indonesia has called on member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to strengthen unity and coordinate efforts to advance the cause of an independent and sovereign Palestine amid growing international recognition of the Palestinian state.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono made the call while addressing the OIC Foreign Ministers’ Annual Coordination Meeting held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24.
Sugiono said that strengthening Palestinian sovereignty remains a central objective of the Islamic world, stressing that greater unity among OIC member states would enhance solidarity and cooperation in advancing the interests of the Muslim world.
He noted that continued violence against Palestinians in Gaza, along with the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, remains an obstacle to achieving a two-state solution. He also emphasized the need to uphold international law and ensure accountability for violations.
Against the backdrop of increasing international recognition of Palestine, Indonesia urged the OIC to use the current momentum to coordinate efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace. Sugiono also encouraged implementation of a Peace Roadmap for Gaza focused on strengthening Palestinian national unity and enhancing the capacity of the Palestinian government.
“Peace efforts must go hand-in-hand with strengthening the Palestinian people’s ability to determine and manage their own future,” Sugiono said.
The Indonesian Foreign Minister further called on the 57-member OIC to play a stronger role in shaping the international order. He noted that, representing nearly two billion Muslims worldwide, the organization has significant collective potential to contribute to international cooperation, including efforts to reform the United Nations.
The meeting also formalized OIC member states’ support for Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, who was elected OIC Secretary-General for the 2026–2031 term following an extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Jeddah last month.
