Jakarta, September 27, 2026 — The Europe Today: Indonesia has emphasized that strengthening resilience at the national level is essential to building a stronger and more effective multilateral system, Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono said during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Speaking on Saturday, September 26, Sugiono said resilient multilateralism must begin with resilient nations and highlighted Indonesia’s long-standing concept of national resilience as a means of safeguarding national identity, sovereignty and unity while sustaining development amid various challenges.
He said Indonesia places its people at the center of its resilience agenda, including efforts to ensure access to essential goods and services. This includes strengthening food self-sufficiency and energy security, improving the quality of education and ensuring access to healthcare.
Sugiono also highlighted Indonesia’s experience as a diverse and multicultural country, saying its national motto, “Unity in Diversity,” provides a foundation for addressing differences through participatory democracy and dialogue.
He reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to protecting human rights through national mechanisms while meeting its international obligations. According to the minister, strengthening human rights also involves ensuring people have access to food, education and healthcare.
Sugiono stressed that countries must strengthen their internal resilience and regional cooperation before they can contribute effectively to collective resilience and progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
He said resilience at the national and regional levels must be supported by a multilateral system capable of sustaining these efforts.
In this context, Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s view of the United Nations as an indispensable institution for safeguarding multilateralism.
The Indonesian foreign minister’s remarks came as Jakarta reiterated its focus on global resilience, multilateral cooperation, UN reform and strengthening the voice of developing countries during the 81st UN General Assembly.
