Jakarta, September 28, 2026 — The Europe Today: Indonesia has formally announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 term, Foreign Minister Sugiono said during Indonesia’s national statement at the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Speaking on Saturday, September 26, local time, Sugiono said Indonesia would campaign under the theme “Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace.”
He explained that fostering unity would involve strengthening trust in the multilateral system and maintaining open channels of dialogue, while advancing peace would require upholding international law and making effective use of available international mechanisms.
Sugiono said Indonesia’s commitment to contributing to global peace and conflict resolution supported its candidacy for the Security Council.
“ Our Constitution mandates us to contribute to the world based on the values of freedom, lasting peace, and social justice through diplomacy and mediation,” he said.
The Foreign Minister highlighted Indonesia’s longstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping operations, noting that the country has participated in UN peacekeeping missions since 1957. Indonesian peacekeepers have also served in Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for two decades.
Sugiono said Indonesia would continue to promote dialogue, seek common ground and translate shared responsibilities into concrete cooperation if elected to the Security Council.
“We will bring the same principle that guides our foreign policy to engage with all parties, while keeping space for cooperation open,” he said.
Indonesia’s candidacy had previously been announced by Sugiono during the Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs on January 14, 2026. At the time, he said Indonesia would seek support for its bid for the 2029–2030 term.
Indonesia has served four times as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, during the 1973–1974, 1995–1996, 2007–2008 and 2019–2020 periods. The country also held the Security Council presidency in August 2020.
The latest candidacy marks Indonesia’s renewed effort to contribute to international peace and security through the United Nations’ principal body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
