Beijing, August 05, 2024, The Europe Today: China’s Ministry of Emergency Management issued a warning on Sunday, urging authorities to remain vigilant against potential flooding as significant rainfall is forecast to persist in certain regions over the coming days.
Despite an overall decrease in precipitation expected across the country over the next three days, the ministry predicts measurable rainfall will continue in the northeastern region, the Yellow River and Huaihe River basins, and Yunnan Province in southwest China.
The ministry emphasized that the flood control situation remains challenging, with water levels in the Liaohe River and a section of the Songhuajiang River in the northeast remaining above warning marks.
Authorities were urged to fulfill their responsibilities, remain vigilant, and continue inspecting and protecting vulnerable embankment sections. The ministry stressed the importance of maintaining alertness against secondary disasters triggered by heavy downpours and flooding, and called for strengthened safety management of water-side scenic spots and main roads near mountain slopes and cliffs.
Recent local incidents, such as road and bridge collapses resulting in casualties, underscore the need for ongoing vigilance. Notably, a flash flood and mudslide struck the city of Kangding in Sichuan Province early Saturday morning, toppling a tunnel bridge and destroying homes in a village. The disaster left four people dead and 23 missing as of 11 p.m. Saturday.
In response to the disaster in Kangding, a large unmanned aerial vehicle has been dispatched to provide reconnaissance and communications support.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Emergency Management, along with the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, held joint discussions with meteorological, water resources, and natural resources authorities. They coordinated flood control efforts in key regions including Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Hunan, and Sichuan via video conference.
The ministry also called for intensified efforts in drainage, epidemic prevention, and expedited post-disaster reconstruction.
