Jakarta, September 11, 2024, The Europe Today: Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry has highlighted the potential of green hydrogen in accelerating the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the industrial sector. Speaking on Tuesday, Reni Yanita, Acting Director General of Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Textile Industries, emphasized the importance of low-carbon energy solutions in addressing the country’s energy crisis and commitment to climate goals.
Yanita pointed out that the development of green hydrogen is a crucial strategy in Indonesia’s pursuit of its net-zero emissions (NZE) target by 2050. She noted that reliable, safe, and efficient infrastructure is necessary to support the massive use of hydrogen for industrial energy needs.
“The industry must take advantage of hydrogen utilization opportunities by preparing efficient infrastructure and technology in line with safety standards,” Yanita said, adding that this could lay the groundwork for building a hydrogen ecosystem within the country.
Rachmat Harsono, Chairperson of the Indonesia Industrial Gas Association (AGII), echoed this sentiment, noting Indonesia’s strategic position for hydrogen development amidst growing global demand for cleaner energy. Harsono stressed the importance of safety awareness in the gas industry to ensure a sustainable decarbonization process.
Indonesia has significant renewable energy potential, with a capacity of 3,687 gigawatts (GW) from sources including solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy, hydropower, and wave energy. The country’s push toward green hydrogen is expected to further unlock this potential, contributing to long-term sustainability and emission reduction efforts.
