Beijing, September 21, 2024 — The Europe Today: Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar on Friday in Beijing, where both leaders pledged to elevate the China-Malaysia relationship and build a stronger community with a shared future. This meeting marks a significant milestone, celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
President Xi emphasized the historical friendship between China and Malaysia, which has flourished since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1974. He praised the nations’ close cooperation, which has become a model for mutual achievement and win-win partnerships in the region. This year, designated the Year of China-Malaysia Friendship, offers both countries the opportunity to deepen their collaboration and push forward new initiatives.
Xi reiterated China’s readiness to strengthen strategic cooperation with Malaysia, deepen mutual support, and work together toward modernization. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining high-level exchanges, aligning development strategies, and expanding cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. Key projects such as the “Two Countries, Twin Parks” and the East Coast Rail Link were highlighted as vital pillars of the two countries’ growing economic collaboration.
In addition to economic cooperation, Xi stressed the importance of cultural and educational exchanges. He called for greater mutual learning between Chinese and Islamic civilizations, and enhanced cooperation in higher education, scientific research, and new technologies such as the digital economy and renewable energy.
King Sultan Ibrahim expressed his admiration for China’s remarkable development and reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with China. He endorsed key Chinese initiatives, including the Global Development Initiative and the Belt and Road Initiative, underscoring Malaysia’s willingness to collaborate on various fronts, including infrastructure, trade, education, and regional security.
The Malaysian King also commended China’s fair stance on international issues such as the Palestinian conflict and affirmed his country’s intent to work with China to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea. He highlighted Malaysia’s upcoming role as the rotating chair of ASEAN, expressing a desire for close cooperation with China on regional matters.
The meeting concluded with a state banquet hosted by President Xi in honor of King Sultan Ibrahim, reaffirming the enduring bond between China and Malaysia and their commitment to building a future of shared prosperity and peace.
