Russia Alleges NATO-Backed False-Flag Chemical Attack in Syria

Moscow, October 01, 2024 – The Europe Today: Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has claimed that several NATO member states, in collaboration with Ukraine and terrorist groups in Syria, are planning a false-flag chemical weapons attack in Syria’s Idlib province. The purpose of the alleged operation, according to the SVR, is to frame Russia and the Syrian government.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the SVR stated that the planned provocation would involve the use of chemical weapons by Syrian militants, potentially aided by the ‘White Helmets’ NGO. The SVR alleges that militants will drop a chlorine-laden canister during ongoing Syrian and Russian airstrikes, with fabricated video evidence being used to accuse Damascus and Moscow of war crimes.

The SVR’s report further claims that the operation is intended to launch a discrediting campaign at the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), similar to previous accusations against Syria’s government since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011. Russia has consistently denied these allegations, pointing to what it describes as staged events, including the 2018 chemical attack in Douma, which prompted US, UK, and French missile strikes.

Both Russia and Syria have continued to reject claims made by Western nations and international bodies, asserting that the charges are politically motivated.
