Pakistan Seeks Stronger Partnership with U.S. in Economy, Education, and Climate

Islamabad, November 19, 2024 – The Europe Today: Pakistan’s Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, has expressed a strong commitment to deepening cooperation with the United States in critical areas, including the economy, climate change, science and technology, agriculture, education, and health.

Speaking at a USAID event in Islamabad today, Iqbal emphasized the importance of revitalizing bilateral ties in the context of the new U.S. administration. He underscored the necessity of adapting to global shifts by expanding and enhancing the longstanding partnership between the two nations.

“The U.S. remains one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade exceeding $6.5 billion in 2023,” Iqbal noted. Highlighting the significance of key Pakistani exports such as textiles, surgical instruments, and IT services, he pointed to the untapped potential for growth in trade.

The Minister proposed removing trade barriers and promoting joint ventures as practical measures to boost economic ties. “There is vast potential for growth,” he remarked, adding that strengthening trade relations could foster job creation, drive innovation, and enhance economic resilience.

Iqbal also reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to reviving the U.S.-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor project, a pivotal initiative aimed at advancing research collaborations, academic exchanges, and dual degree programs. He stressed its role in fostering Pakistan’s transition to a knowledge-based economy.

“This initiative can help Pakistan develop its intellectual and technological infrastructure,” he said, emphasizing the long-term benefits of educational and research synergies.

While acknowledging the progress in bilateral relations, Iqbal called for a partnership based on mutual respect to address shared challenges effectively. He concluded by underscoring the need for a diversified and robust US-Pakistan relationship to tackle global issues and ensure regional stability.

The event marked a renewed push for strategic collaboration between the two countries, signaling optimism for a stronger, mutually beneficial partnership in the years ahead.
