Sanya, November 30, 2024 – The Europe Today: The 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities officially concluded on Saturday evening in Sanya, Hainan Province, with a grand closing ceremony at the Sanya Sports Center. The event marked the end of a nine-day celebration of culture, sports, and ethnic unity, and featured the formal handover of the Games to the next host, Hunan Province.
Flags representing the 35 delegations were waved in unison during the closing ceremony, a powerful symbol of unity and diversity. Chinese State Councilor Shen Yiqin declared the Games officially closed, following which the stadium flame was extinguished, signaling the end of this year’s Games.
Gao Zhidan, director of China’s General Administration of Sport, delivered a heartfelt address, reflecting on the significance of the Games. “Athletes from 35 delegations competed on the same stage, demonstrating not only their strength and skill but also a profound emotional and spiritual connection,” Gao said. He extended his gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the event, including athletes, staff, volunteers, and media.
Gao emphasized that the Games celebrated the achievements of ethnic unity, progress, and the promotion of national fitness. “The Games allowed us to share the fruitful achievements of ethnic unity and progress, as well as the advancement of national fitness. Let us reunite in Hunan in 2027,” he added.
A total of 6,960 athletes participated in the Games, competing in 18 sports and three demonstration events, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and athleticism of various ethnic communities.
The official flag of the Games was handed over to Li Jianzhong, Vice Governor of Hunan Province, symbolizing the province’s role as the next host. Following the handover, an eight-minute performance by the Hunan delegation offered a glimpse of what participants and spectators can expect at the 13th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities, which will be held in Hunan Province in 2027.
