Over 270,000 Germans Demand Ban on Private Fireworks After Fatal New Year’s Eve

Berlin, January 4, 2025 – The Europe Today: An online petition calling for a nationwide ban on private fireworks in Germany has gathered over 270,000 signatures following a tragic New Year’s Eve marked by deaths and injuries.

At least five people lost their lives, and numerous others were injured during the celebrations, where private fireworks are traditionally used. In addition to accidents, emergency services in several cities faced attacks with pyrotechnics, continuing a concerning trend from recent years. In Berlin, a police officer was severely injured and required surgery.

The incident has reignited the debate among politicians about restricting or banning certain types of pyrotechnics. Speaking to firefighters on Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the need for stricter regulations.

“We must have clear rules on what pyrotechnics can be used and take tough action against all those who do not comply with the law,” Scholz stated, adding that implementing such measures was the right course of action.

The petition’s popularity reflects growing public concern over the safety and misuse of fireworks during New Year’s Eve celebrations.
