President Prabowo and PM Anwar Strengthen Indonesia-Malaysia Ties

Kuala Lumpur, January 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim engaged in discussions on strategic issues and bilateral cooperation during a luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Anwar on Thursday. The meeting coincided with President Prabowo’s official visit to Kuala Lumpur.

“The meeting is an important symbol of Indonesia-Malaysia relations and strengthens bilateral ties across various sectors,” the Presidential Secretariat stated.

Prime Minister Anwar warmly welcomed President Prabowo at the historic Rumah Tangsi in Kuala Lumpur, where the luncheon took place. Upon arrival, the two leaders admired the urban landscape of Kuala Lumpur, including the iconic Petronas Towers, before proceeding to an art exhibition highlighting Malaysia’s cultural and historical heritage.

Both leaders donned traditional batik attire for the occasion, with PM Anwar wearing a light blue silvery batik and President Prabowo dressed in a dark brown batik. Rumah Tangsi, a venue often chosen by PM Anwar for hosting distinguished state guests, recently served as the site for a banquet with Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong earlier in the week.

President Prabowo, who arrived in Kuala Lumpur at 10 a.m. local time accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, is scheduled to return to Indonesia later on Thursday afternoon.

This visit marks President Prabowo’s first trip to Malaysia since assuming office, as confirmed by Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry in Putrajaya.

Discussions between the two leaders focused on bolstering bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation. As Malaysia prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, they also exchanged views on advancing ASEAN’s development, regional cooperation, and addressing pressing global challenges.

The visit reaffirms the deep-rooted ties between Indonesia and Malaysia, which span economic, social, cultural, defense, and security collaborations, reflecting the special relationship between the two neighboring nations.
