Rome, January 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: SS. Lazio, the fifth-oldest football club in Italy, marked its 125th anniversary with grand celebrations in Rome. More than 4,000 fans gathered in the Prati neighborhood at midnight on Wednesday to honor the historic milestone of the Italian Serie A football club.
The celebrations, following an annual countdown tradition, were held in Piazza della Libertà, outside the Casina della Fondazione Lazio, where Società Sportiva Lazio was founded on January 9, 1900.
Festivities will continue on Thursday afternoon with a special ceremony at Rome city hall. The event will celebrate the wide-ranging contributions of Lazio, from football to athletics, swimming, and rugby.
To commemorate the occasion, the club has also launched a special anniversary kit.
SS. Lazio holds a unique place in Rome’s football history. Over the decade following its foundation, three other clubs were established in the city: Roman FC (1901), SS Alba-Audace (1907), and Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS (1908). In 1927, Lazio was the only major Roman club to resist the fascist regime’s attempt to merge all city teams into what would later become AS Roma.
SS. Lazio stands as the fifth-oldest football club in Italy, following Genoa (1893), Udinese (1896), Juventus (1897), and Milan (1899), while predating clubs like Atalanta (1907) and Inter (1908).
