Beijing, January 15, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the absence of fundamental conflicts between China and the European Union (EU) during a phone conversation with European Council President Antonio Costa on Tuesday, highlighting the potential for both sides to contribute to each other’s success.
Marking the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations, Xi described this milestone as a foundation for continuity and a new starting point for enhanced cooperation. He stressed the importance of mutual respect, equality, and candid dialogue in advancing their partnership, which has yielded significant achievements over the past five decades.
“Like-mindedness defines partnership, and seeking common ground while respecting differences is essential,” Xi stated, underscoring the need for both sides to honor each other’s social systems, development paths, core interests, and major concerns.
China’s Commitment to Strategic Cooperation
Xi reaffirmed China’s support for European integration and the EU’s pursuit of strategic autonomy, identifying Europe as a key pillar in a multipolar world. He called for the two sides to learn from their shared history, safeguard the political foundation of their relationship, and enhance mutual trust to bring greater benefits to their peoples and contribute to global stability.
Despite challenges in the international landscape, Xi said China remains confident in the EU as a trustworthy partner and called for strengthening strategic communication and economic collaboration. He highlighted the mutually beneficial nature of their economic and trade ties, which have created a strong symbiotic relationship.
“China’s commitment to high-quality development and high-level opening-up will provide new opportunities for EU-China cooperation,” Xi added, encouraging both sides to expand mutual openness, explore new growth areas, and ensure the success of celebratory events marking the 50th anniversary.
EU’s Vision for Enhanced Relations
European Council President Antonio Costa acknowledged the significance of 2025 as a landmark year for EU-China relations and reaffirmed the EU’s willingness to deepen strategic trust and cooperation with China.
Costa emphasized the importance of addressing economic and trade differences through dialogue, while reiterating shared principles, such as adherence to the UN Charter, support for multilateralism, and opposition to bloc confrontation.
“Cooperation, not competition, is needed to address global challenges such as climate change and to contribute to world peace, stability, and development,” Costa said.
Global Challenges and the Path Ahead
Both leaders recognized the critical role of EU-China collaboration in tackling pressing global issues. The discussion included an exchange of views on the Ukraine conflict, where Xi reiterated China’s position of promoting peace talks.
Looking ahead, both sides committed to enhancing cultural exchanges, supporting educational cooperation, and fostering goodwill among their peoples. The dialogue reinforced their shared aspiration to build a brighter future for EU-China relations, contributing to global peace and prosperity.
