Berlin, March 26, 2025 – The Europe Today: Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented members of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s outgoing government with their certificates of dismissal on Tuesday evening at his residence in Bellevue Palace.
The move is customary as the new Bundestag was seated. Earlier in the day, Steinmeier had asked Chancellor Scholz to continue his duties in accordance with the Basic Law until a new government is in office.
During the dismissal ceremony, the German president praised the achievements of the outgoing cabinet, particularly its response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He acknowledged that the measures taken by the Scholz government to support Ukraine “was and is an immense feat of strength.”
Steinmeier also highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen Germany’s resilience. He commended its success in forging cross-party alliances to enhance the nation’s defense capabilities through a special fund, ensuring long-term security and stability.
