Turkmenistan and Iran Hold Bilateral Consultations on Caspian Sea Maritime Border and Environmental Issues

Ashgabat, April 10, 2025 — The Europe Today: Turkmenistan and Iran have taken further steps to strengthen their cooperation in the Caspian region with bilateral consultations focused on the definition of the maritime border, the delimitation of fishing zones, and the division of the seabed of the Caspian Sea. The talks took place on April 7–8, 2025, at the Institute of the Caspian Sea in Ashgabat, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The Turkmen delegation was led by Myrat Atajanov, Director of the Caspian Sea Institute, while the Iranian side was headed by Alireza Jahangiri, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran for Caspian Sea Affairs.

In addition to key issues of maritime boundary delimitation, the two sides engaged in broader discussions surrounding regional cooperation, including multilateral coordination among the five Caspian littoral states. Environmental concerns were also highlighted as an important aspect of the dialogue, with both nations emphasizing the need to preserve the ecological balance of the Caspian Sea amid increasing regional activity.

The consultations reflect a continued commitment by both Ashgabat and Tehran to resolve outstanding legal and environmental matters through peaceful dialogue, in line with international law and the 2018 Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea.
