Jakarta, May 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia and Norway have pledged joint support for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’s UN80 Initiative, emphasizing the need for a modern and effective UN system that remains relevant in the face of evolving global challenges.
This commitment was conveyed during a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir and his Norwegian counterpart Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik. The discussion took place against the backdrop of ongoing global efforts to strengthen multilateralism and was announced through an official press release by Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.
The two deputy ministers shared the view that the United Nations must be equipped to adapt to new circumstances while remaining aligned with its founding principles. They agreed that an ambitious and inclusive reform of the UN and the multilateral system is vital to ensure a just and rules-based international order, especially in the current complex geopolitical environment.
Both Indonesia and Norway underlined their strong commitment to upholding the UN Charter, international law, and the core principles and objectives of the United Nations. They noted that cross-regional support would be essential in ensuring that the reform process has both legitimacy and global resonance.
The UN80 Initiative, launched by Secretary-General Guterres in March 2025 to mark the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, seeks to revitalize the organization by addressing financial constraints, reviewing outdated mandates, and realigning programs across the UN system. Its aim is to ensure that the UN delivers more efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of the global population it serves.
Both countries reiterated the importance of a well-functioning multilateral system as the foundation for peace, security, sustainable development, and respect for human rights. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to working closely together and with other international partners in support of the UN80 Initiative and broader multilateral reform.
