France Strengthens Ukraine’s Air Defense with Anti-Ballistic Support Commitment

France

Kyiv, May 16, 2026 — The Europe Today: France has pledged to expand its defense assistance to Ukraine by providing specialized technical and operational support aimed at countering Russia’s growing use of ballistic weapons, according to media reports on Saturday.

The development followed a high-level telephone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron on May 16.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, President Zelensky described France’s commitment as a significant step toward strengthening Ukraine’s overstretched air defense system amid intensified Russian attacks.

“I thanked Emmanuel for his principled condemnation of Russian strikes on our cities and communities. These attacks make very clear what Russia is and why we all need to strengthen our collective defense against all threats. France is ready to work on anti-ballistic capabilities. This is a strong decision and an important step. We also discussed boosting our ability to repel Russian attacks right now,” Zelensky stated.

The announcement comes ahead of an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, where Ukrainian officials are expected to present intelligence reports detailing a sharp escalation in Russian aerial assaults.

According to Ukrainian diplomatic data, Russian forces launched around 16 advanced ballistic missiles and nearly 600 attack drones earlier this month, targeting residential and industrial areas. The attacks reportedly bypassed conventional short-range defense systems and resulted in the deaths of more than 40 civilians.

France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s “anti-ballistic” capabilities is seen as a signal that Paris may supply or jointly develop advanced missile interception systems, including the SAMP/T air defense platform, designed to detect and destroy high-speed ballistic threats.

The move underscores growing European efforts to reinforce Ukraine’s defensive capacity as the conflict with Russia continues to intensify.
