Vienna, June 2, 2026 – The Europe Today: Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger has expressed deep concern over the reported expansion of Israeli military operations in Lebanon and strongly condemned the announced plans to carry out attacks on Beirut, warning of further escalation in the region.
In a statement, the Austrian foreign minister said, “We strongly condemn the announcement of attacks on Beirut,” adding that such actions “constitute a serious violation of the ceasefire and a further escalation of tensions.”
At the same time, she stressed the need to halt attacks against Israel and called for the disarmament of Hezbollah, stating that the group remains “the greatest obstacle to peace and stability in Lebanon.” She also welcomed the position of the Lebanese government, noting: “It is encouraging that the Lebanese government has recently and unequivocally distanced itself from this terrorist organization.”
The minister further suggested that direct dialogue between Lebanon and Israel represents the most viable path forward, and expressed appreciation for the mediation efforts led by the United States in seeking to reduce tensions.
Reaffirming Austria’s commitment to regional stability, she said Vienna will continue to support the Lebanese Armed Forces through diplomatic engagement in coordination with European Union partners. She also pointed to ongoing efforts to increase and reallocate humanitarian assistance for Lebanon.
“The protection of the Lebanese people is a top priority for us,” she said, highlighting the role of Austrian troops serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in supporting stability and security in the region.
The statement comes amid heightened international concern over the risk of broader conflict escalation in the Middle East, with diplomatic actors urging restraint and renewed political dialogue.
