Flooding Affects Over 30,000 Families Across 12 Provinces, Heavy Rain Expected to Continue

Bangkok, September 15, 2024 – The Europe Today: Severe flooding continues to affect 30,073 families across 12 provinces in Thailand, with the situation worsening in several northeastern regions. Authorities have warned that heavy rainfall is expected to persist this week, adding to the already dire situation.

Chaiwat Chuntirapong, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, reported on Sunday that multiple provinces are experiencing significant flooding, with some regions facing rising water levels.

In Ang Thong, Wiset Chai Chan district remains flooded, but the water levels are stable. Similarly, Ayutthaya province is struggling with high floodwaters in Bang Ban, Bang Pahan, Bang Pa-in, Bang Sai, Phai Hai, and Sena districts, where conditions remain unchanged.

Other areas, such as Chiang Rai province, particularly in Chiang Khong, Chiang Saen, Doi Luang, Mae Chan, Mae Fah Luang, Mae Sai, Muang, Thoeng, and Wiang Kaen districts, are experiencing falling flood levels. However, in Loei province, Chiang Khan and Pak Chom districts are facing rising waters, as is Nan province’s Wiang Sa district.

In Mae Hong Son, Pang Ma Pha and Sop Moei districts are witnessing decreasing flood levels. Similarly, Phetchabun and Phitsanulok provinces are seeing declining or stable floodwaters. Meanwhile, other provinces like Nong Khai, Tak, and Sukhothai are also grappling with varying flood conditions, with some districts seeing water levels recede, while others face a continuous rise.

Since August 16, flooding has claimed 43 lives, injured 24 people, and affected 133,040 families in 28 provinces, with half of the most impacted regions being in the North.

The Meteorological Department forecasts that from Sunday to Tuesday, heavy rains will impact the Northeast, East, and the western coast of the South. From Wednesday to Saturday, rain will ease in the North and upper Northeast but continue in the lower Northeast, Central Plains, East, and South, exacerbating the flood risk in these areas.

Authorities are urging residents in affected provinces to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as rescue and relief operations continue.
