Minsk, September 29, 2024 – The Europe Today: Belarus expects its application for membership in BRICS to be reviewed soon, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov. Speaking to RIA Novosti during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Ryzhenkov emphasized that BRICS is one of the fastest-growing global organizations and that Belarus is keen to join its ranks.
“We have submitted our application, and we expect it to be processed in the near future,” Ryzhenkov stated. He further explained that the next phase of BRICS expansion would grant partner status to several nations, with countries being evaluated on their commitment to BRICS principles and adherence to specific criteria.
Currently, BRICS is developing criteria for new partner states. Ryzhenkov revealed that the first wave of expansion would be addressed at the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan, scheduled for the second half of October 2024. “Russia, as the current BRICS president, is preparing a list of around ten countries for this expansion,” he added.
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has expressed strong interest in BRICS integration, highlighting the organization’s significance on the global stage. With BRICS representing more than 40% of the world’s population, Lukashenko views it as a key pillar for maintaining economic balance and stability. He has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to draft a strategy for Belarus’ participation in BRICS, including plans for bilateral engagements within the platform.
BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) continues to be a major force in international economic cooperation, and Belarus sees the organization as crucial for its future development and stability.
