Putrajaya, February 11, 2025 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hosted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for a four-eyed meeting at the Perdana Putra Complex on Tuesday, as part of a two-day official visit to Malaysia. Erdoğan’s visit, which began on Monday, February 10, was made at the invitation of Anwar.
The bilateral meeting took place following a nearly one-hour welcoming ceremony and centered on strengthening Malaysia-Türkiye relations. Key topics discussed included the progress of the Malaysia-Türkiye Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), which was officially elevated in July 2022. Both leaders reviewed advancements in areas such as trade and investment, defense, halal industry cooperation, energy, disaster management, health, science and technology, and connectivity.
Additionally, the leaders exchanged views on several regional and international matters of mutual interest. These included Malaysia’s current chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Türkiye’s upcoming hosting of the 4th Edition of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in 2025, Islamophobia, and the recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
The strong and enduring ties between Malaysia and Türkiye were emphasized during the talks, underscoring the countries’ shared interests in enhancing cooperation. Erdoğan’s visit also reflects Türkiye’s continued role in ASEAN, following its establishment as an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner in 2017. The ASEAN-Türkiye Practical Cooperation Areas (2024-2028) will serve as a key framework for further strategic collaborations between ASEAN and Türkiye, with a focus on advancing economic priorities within the region.
The fruitful discussions marked another milestone in the growing bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Türkiye, highlighting both nations’ commitment to fostering mutual cooperation on various fronts.
