Jakarta, July 28, 2025 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will embark on a two-day working visit to Indonesia beginning Monday to participate in the 13th Annual Consultation with President Prabowo Subianto — the first such meeting between the two leaders.
The Prime Minister will be accompanied by key Malaysian government leaders, including Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
“The Annual Consultation is the highest-level bilateral mechanism between Malaysia and Indonesia and serves to reinforce strategic and comprehensive cooperation between both countries,” said Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin, during a media briefing in Jakarta on Sunday (July 27).
Held alternately between the two nations since its inception in 2006, the Annual Consultation underscores the strong political will of both governments to deepen collaboration in various sectors, including trade and investment, defence and security, digital and physical connectivity, food security, and education.
Ambassador Syed Mohamad Hasrin added that the two leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international developments of mutual concern. A Joint Statement is expected to be issued at the conclusion of the consultation.
The last Annual Consultation was held in 2017, making this high-level engagement particularly timely for both nations to reaffirm their strategic partnership and explore new avenues for cooperation amidst evolving regional and global challenges.
During the visit, both leaders are also scheduled to witness the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the areas of land border cooperation, health, and information and communications technology.
Prime Minister Anwar is also slated to visit the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta at the invitation of ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn. He will deliver a policy address on ASEAN in the context of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, reiterating Malaysia’s steadfast commitment to regional integration and community-building.
Indonesia remains a key economic partner for Malaysia. In 2024, Indonesia ranked as Malaysia’s sixth-largest global trading partner and second-largest within ASEAN. Bilateral trade grew by 4.5%, rising from RM111.21 billion (US$24.39 billion) in 2023 to RM116.29 billion (US$25.5 billion) in 2024.
