Tô Lâm Meets Korean National Assembly Speaker to Bolster Strategic Partnership

Seoul, August 13, 2025 – The Europe Today: Party General Secretary Tô Lâm met with Woo Won Sik, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (RoK), in Seoul on Tuesday as part of his ongoing state visit, aiming to deepen the Vietnam–RoK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

At the meeting, General Secretary Lâm conveyed greetings from National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn and other senior Vietnamese leaders, and congratulated the RoK on its socio-economic achievements. He expressed confidence that the country would continue to enhance its regional and global standing, with the National Assembly playing a pivotal role.

He called for stronger cooperation to fully leverage bilateral and multilateral collaboration mechanisms, increased market access for Vietnamese exports, and joint efforts to meet the target of US$150 billion in two-way trade by 2030. Lâm also proposed expanded collaboration in labour and high-quality human resources training, and urged the RoK to create favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live, study, work, and integrate into Korean society. Notably, he expressed the hope that overseas Vietnamese could eventually serve as members of the Korean National Assembly.

Speaker Woo welcomed the visit, voicing his belief that it would create fresh momentum for bilateral ties. He praised Việt Nam’s socio-economic progress under the leadership of the Communist Party of Việt Nam, expressing confidence in the nation’s goal of becoming a high-income, developed country by 2045.

Both leaders affirmed their satisfaction with the comprehensive and effective cooperation between the two countries, including strong parliamentary relations. They pledged to further enhance legislative collaboration, support the implementation of agreements signed between the two governments, and facilitate economic growth in a substantive and balanced manner.

Lâm stressed the need to implement existing parliamentary cooperation agreements and to strengthen exchanges between the two legislatures, highlighting the bridge-building role of the friendship parliamentarian groups in both countries.

The two sides also discussed regional and global matters of mutual interest, underscoring the importance of mutual support at multilateral forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly for Peace (AAPP). They reaffirmed a shared commitment to ensuring security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea (South China Sea), maintaining peace and stability, and resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
