President Pezeshkian Urges BRICS to Resist Unilateral Sanctions, Calls for Global Governance Reform

BRICS

Tehran, September 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: President Masoud Pezeshkian has called on BRICS nations to play a leading role in countering unilateral sanctions and advancing reforms in global governance, warning that such measures undermine justice, stability, and sustainable development.

Addressing a virtual BRICS Summit on the global economy and multilateral order on Monday, Pezeshkian stressed the interdependence of cooperation and open markets. “Multilateralism and free trade are two sides of the same coin,” he said. “Without multilateral mechanisms, free trade becomes a tool in the hands of major powers, and without access to a free trading system, multilateralism is stripped of its meaning and function.”

He described unilateral sanctions and economic restrictions as one of the most serious threats to the international system, noting that they erode national interests, disrupt cooperation, and block sustainable development.

Citing ongoing conflicts, Pezeshkian referred to the US-Israeli aggression against Iran in June, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, attacks on Lebanon and Yemen, and US threats against Venezuela as evidence of the failure of the current world order to safeguard peace, justice, and security.

The president urged reforms to international governance, including restructuring the UN Security Council and overhauling global financial systems. He further called on BRICS to establish a joint framework to resist sanctions, encourage innovation, and strengthen pathways for sustainable development.
