Copenhagen, March 12, 2026 – The Europe Today: Denmark’s iconic Little Mermaid statue on Copenhagen’s Langelinie promenade was found fitted with a pig mask and a sign reading “close the animal factories” on Thursday night in what appeared to be an animal rights protest.
The famous bronze statue, one of the Danish capital’s most visited landmarks, was temporarily altered with the mask and message advocating the closure of large-scale animal farming operations.
Police officers who visited the scene stated that no illegal activity had taken place, according to Danish news agency Ritzau.
The Little Mermaid statue, inspired by the fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, has long been a symbolic landmark in Copenhagen and has occasionally been targeted in protests and artistic demonstrations over the years.
