Yangon, March 13, 2026 – The Europe Today: Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission and Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, presided over a ceremony to commission aircraft aimed at enhancing the air capabilities of Tatmadaw (Air) at a local airbase in Meiktila Station.
Addressing the ceremony, the Senior General emphasized that the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) must continue to be strengthened in order to safeguard the country’s territory and protect national interests. He noted that a strong and capable defence force is essential for preserving the nation’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He highlighted that effective protection of national interests depends on a capable Tatmadaw (Air) with strong air control capacity. According to the Senior General, the ownership of aircraft and helicopters goes beyond possessing the platforms themselves and includes the availability of supporting systems, maintenance and logistics networks, and advanced training systems.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing stressed the importance of developing qualified and well-trained human resources, noting that skilled personnel are essential to effectively operate and manage airpower assets. He called for continuous efforts to produce capable Tatmadaw members who can fully utilize available resources.
Reflecting on the history of the air force, the Senior General said that Tatmadaw (Air) has consistently fulfilled its duties since its establishment, demonstrating capabilities in counter-insurgency operations, counter-terrorism efforts, and defending against external threats. He also highlighted the air force’s contributions to nation-building, disaster response and rescue operations, environmental conservation, and anti-drug campaigns.
The Senior General urged personnel to further strengthen the achievements of the air force and effectively perform the responsibilities assigned by the state and the Tatmadaw. He encouraged them to operate and maintain aircraft, helicopters, and weapons systems professionally and to uphold the traditions and legacy of Tatmadaw (Air) for future generations.
During the ceremony, Commander-in-Chief (Air) General Tun Aung explained the process of commissioning the aircraft, while Chief of Staff (Air) Lt. Gen. Tun Win formally declared the aircraft operational.
General Tun Aung also presented a commemorative gift marking the commissioning of the aircraft and helicopters to the Senior General. The event included aerial demonstrations by squadrons of aircraft and helicopters in salute to the Senior General.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and accompanying officials later sprinkled scented water on the newly commissioned aircraft, inspected the equipment, and posed for documentary photographs. He also greeted the pilots who participated in the demonstration flights and presented them with cash awards.
The ceremony was attended by Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, the wife of the Senior General; Commission Secretary and Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Ye Win Oo, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Admiral Htein Win, Commander-in-Chief (Air) General Tun Aung, union ministers, the Mandalay Region Chief Minister, senior Tatmadaw officers, and airbase commanders.
