Azerbaijan and Türkiye Discuss Expansion of Military Cooperation During High-Level Meeting

Baku, April 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: Hikmat Mirzayev, Deputy Minister of Defense of Azerbaijan and Commander of the Land Forces, held talks with a delegation led by Metin Tokel, Commander of the Land Forces of Türkiye, on April 28 to discuss strengthening bilateral military cooperation.

The visit began with an official ceremony during which the delegation laid flowers at the bust of Heydar Aliyev, paying tribute to the National Leader. A minute of silence was observed in honor of the late leader and the martyrs (Shehids) who sacrificed their lives for the country.

During the welcoming ceremony, both commanders reviewed the guard of honor while the national anthems of Azerbaijan and Türkiye were performed, reflecting the close ties between the two nations.

Focus on Strengthening Defense Ties

In subsequent talks, the two sides held detailed discussions on the current state of Azerbaijani-Turkish military cooperation and explored avenues for its further expansion.

Officials emphasized the significance of joint and international military exercises in enhancing the professionalism, operational readiness, and technical capabilities of personnel from both countries’ armed forces.

The meeting also covered a range of other issues of mutual interest, underscoring the strategic partnership and strong defense collaboration between Azerbaijan and Türkiye.
