Jakarta, May 9, 2026 – The Europe Today: President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized the importance of improving communication and internet access in Indonesia’s outermost regions to ensure residents remain connected and feel the presence of the state in their daily lives.
During a working visit to Miangas in the Talaud Islands on Saturday, the Indonesian president announced that the government would provide extensive telecommunications support, including hundreds of Starlink service units, mobile phones, internet modems, and the strengthening of telecommunications infrastructure through the construction of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS).
Addressing local residents, President Prabowo said Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid would oversee the distribution of mobile phones and Starlink units to households in the region.
The president stressed that communication connectivity is no longer an optional facility but a fundamental necessity for modern society and an important element of national defense and sovereignty. He noted that Indonesia’s frontier and outermost territories must remain a development priority to prevent isolation and ensure equal access to essential communication services.
President Prabowo said the strengthening of communication networks in Miangas is expected to support education, healthcare services, and economic activities, particularly for coastal communities and fishermen. Enhanced connectivity is also anticipated to improve emergency communication capabilities in border areas and create new economic opportunities for local residents.
“The presence of a stable communication network is expected to improve public service quality and accelerate community access to various government digital services,” the president stated.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader development strategy, which extends beyond major urban centers to include outer islands that represent the front line of Indonesia’s national sovereignty.
Through these measures, President Prabowo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all Indonesians, including those living in remote border regions, enjoy equal access to information, communication, and national development opportunities.
