Baku Hosts Grand Opening Ceremony of 13th World Urban Forum

Baku, May 18, 2026 – The Europe Today: The opening ceremony of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) was held in Baku on Monday, bringing together heads of state, government representatives, and international delegates from across the world.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended the ceremony.

The Azerbaijani President and Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Anacláudia Rossbach welcomed heads of state and government, along with leaders of delegations participating in the global forum.

The official welcoming ceremony was followed by a family photo session featuring the distinguished guests and delegates.

During the event, a video prepared by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) highlighting the significance and objectives of WUF13 was screened, followed by a cultural programme showcasing Azerbaijan’s heritage and traditions.

Addressing the ceremony, President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing urbanization challenges and promoting sustainable urban development.

Video messages from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and President of the United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbock were also presented to participants.

In addition, President of the UN-Habitat Assembly Nga Kor Ming and UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach delivered speeches emphasizing the need for inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban development worldwide.

The World Urban Forum serves as a major international platform for dialogue on urbanization, housing, climate resilience, and the future of cities.
