Brenner Pass, May 31, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Brenner Pass, a key Alpine transport route linking Austria and Italy, has been reopened after thousands of people took part in a large-scale blockade protesting against heavy traffic, noise pollution and congestion.
According to motorway operator ASFINAG, all lanes have now been reopened and traffic flow has returned to normal after the hours-long disruption.
Earlier on Saturday, thousands of demonstrators gathered at the mountain pass, calling for urgent measures to address environmental concerns caused by increasing freight traffic along one of Europe’s busiest transit corridors.
While authorities had warned of potential severe traffic disruptions, officials reported that no major gridlock occurred beyond temporary slowdowns during the protest.
Police confirmed that 219 trucks were turned back during the demonstration as access to the route was temporarily restricted.
The rally had raised concerns among transport operators and local residents over persistent congestion and noise pollution in the Alpine region, which is a critical passage for cross-border trade between Austria and Italy.
Authorities said monitoring of traffic conditions will continue as discussions over long-term solutions for freight movement through the region remain ongoing.
