Moscow, June 14, 2026 — The Europe Today: The Russian capital Moscow was struck by a powerful tropical downpour on June 13, accompanied by large hail and strong winds, causing widespread disruption across the city.
According to media reports, a total of 27 mm of rain fell within 24 hours, surpassing the monthly average by 35% and setting a new daily rainfall record for the date. The previous record, established in 2020, has now been broken.
The intense rainfall led to severe urban flooding in several districts, with water levels in some areas rising above vehicle wheel height. Authorities and local reports also indicated that buses were affected, with water entering interiors in multiple locations.
In southeastern Moscow, the roof of the Vostok shopping center in the Kuzminki district reportedly leaked during the storm, forcing visitors to take shelter inside the building while using umbrellas indoors as water entered the premises.
Meteorologists described the event as an unusually intense weather system for this time of year, highlighting increasing variability in seasonal rainfall patterns.
