Norway Mark World Cup Return with Convincing 4-1 Victory Over Iraq

Oslo, June 17, 2026 – The Europe Today: Norway celebrated their return to the FIFA World Cup after a 28-year absence with an impressive 4-1 victory over Iraq, as star striker Erling Braut Haaland led the way with two goals.

Playing in their first World Cup match in nearly three decades, Norway faced a determined Iraqi side that was making its first appearance at the tournament in 40 years. Iraq appeared to be in control during the opening stages, but Norway struck first in the 35th minute through Haaland.

A swift counterattack saw captain Martin Ødegaard deliver a precise pass to Haaland, who calmly finished to give Norway a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, however, as Iraq responded within minutes. Aymen Hussein rose highest to head home the equalizer and level the score at 1-1.

With the first half seemingly heading toward a draw, Iraq goalkeeper Jalal Hassan committed a costly error that allowed Haaland to score his second goal of the match and restore Norway’s lead before the break.

Norway maintained their momentum in the second half and extended their advantage when Leo Østigård found the net to make it 3-1. Kristian Thorstvedt then added a fourth goal to seal a comprehensive victory.

The result marks a dream start to Norway’s World Cup campaign, with Haaland playing a decisive role in the team’s successful return to football’s biggest stage.
