Azerbaijan, Republic of Korea Hold High-Level Talks on Expanding Bilateral Cooperation

Baku, June 18, 2026 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met on June 17 with a delegation led by Eui-hae Cecilia Chung, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs of the Republic of Korea, to discuss the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations.

The talks focused on strengthening cooperation across a wide range of areas, including political dialogue, economic and trade relations, investment, transport, digital development, education, energy security, and innovation.

Minister Bayramov highlighted the positive momentum in Azerbaijan–Republic of Korea relations, emphasizing Azerbaijan’s large-scale infrastructure initiatives and its growing role as a key transport and logistics hub between Europe and Asia. He particularly underscored the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor, noting ongoing efforts to expand transit capacity and connectivity.

The two sides also exchanged views on cooperation within multilateral frameworks. Bayramov noted that the upcoming Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), to be held under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship, will contribute to strengthening dialogue and trust among member states.

Discussions further covered digital transformation, innovation, and high technologies, with both sides highlighting opportunities for experience sharing and joint projects. In the field of education, they reviewed academic exchange programs and human capital development initiatives, including the Baku State Industry and Innovation Vocational Education Center, established based on Korean educational standards, as well as dual-degree university programs.

Energy cooperation was also addressed, particularly in the areas of energy security, renewable energy development, and green transition initiatives.

Minister Bayramov informed the Korean delegation of Azerbaijan’s decision to introduce visa-free travel for all Korean passport holders, describing it as a step that will significantly enhance tourism and people-to-people contacts. He also briefed the delegation on the Azerbaijan–Armenia peace process and ongoing efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.

The meeting further touched upon the outcomes of the recent summit held in Washington, which both sides said had opened new opportunities for regional cooperation. They also exchanged views on other regional and international issues of mutual interest.

On the same day, a separate round of political consultations was held between the foreign ministries of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Korea, led by Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov and Deputy Minister Eui-hae Cecilia Chung, focusing on advancing bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
