Addis Ababa, June 23, 2026 – The Europe Today: The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has officially announced the results of the country’s 7th General Elections, declaring a sweeping victory for the ruling Prosperity Party and paving the way for the formation of a new government.
The results were unveiled during a ceremony in Addis Ababa, where NEBE officials briefed the media on the outcome of the elections, which saw the participation of more than 54 million registered voters.
According to the official results, the Prosperity Party secured 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives, obtaining a decisive parliamentary majority and a clear constitutional mandate to establish the next federal government.
The party’s parliamentary gains included 167 seats in Oromia, 117 in Amhara, 35 in Southern Ethiopia, 28 in Central Ethiopia, 20 in Addis Ababa, 19 in Somali, 17 in Southwest Ethiopia, 13 in Sidama, 8 in Benishangul-Gumuz, 7 in Afar, 3 in Gambella, and two seats each in Dire Dawa and Harari.
Opposition parties and independent candidates shared the remaining 48 seats. These included representatives from the Ethiopian Unity Party, Afar People’s Party, Gumuz People’s Democratic Party, National Movement of Amhara, and the New Generation Party.
The Prosperity Party also recorded significant successes in regional council elections across the country, further consolidating its political position. The party won 523 of 528 seats in Oromia, 257 of 277 in Amhara, 214 of 252 in the Somali region, 182 seats in South Ethiopia, 176 in Gambella, 175 in Sidama, 161 in Dire Dawa, 145 in Benishangul-Gumuz, 144 in Southwest Ethiopia, 143 in Central Ethiopia, 134 in Addis Ababa, 124 in Afar, and 32 in Harari.
The elections were conducted across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 constituencies for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils.
NEBE stated that the polls were held in a peaceful, orderly and transparent manner. International observer missions, including those from the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), endorsed the overall electoral process and certified its transparency.
The election results are being viewed as a significant development in Ethiopia’s democratic process, providing the Prosperity Party with a strong mandate to lead the country’s next phase of governance and development.
