Marrakech, August 28, 2026 – The Europe Today: Morocco and NATO are set to expand their military cooperation by supporting the training and professional development of African armed forces under the NATO-led Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP).
According to a report published by Morocco World News, citing Africa Intelligence, the initiative marks a further step in Morocco’s growing defense cooperation with NATO, extending engagement beyond political dialogue to practical military education and capacity building.
Morocco joined the DEEP framework in 2025, and the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and NATO are expected to organize a DEEP training session in Morocco later this year or by early 2027. The programme will focus primarily on strengthening the capabilities of non-commissioned officers (NCOs).
Morocco’s Ambassador to NATO, Ahmed Réda Chami, has been involved in negotiations concerning the initiative, which is intended to further develop Morocco’s role in supporting professional military education and defense capacity building in Africa.
NATO’s 2025 Secretary General’s Annual Report, released in March 2026, also highlighted Morocco’s contribution to the programme, noting the launch of trilateral cooperation involving NATO, Morocco and African partner countries to strengthen NCO capabilities.
The initiative reflects Morocco’s expanding role in regional security cooperation and its efforts to strengthen partnerships with African countries through training, institutional development and military education.
The planned cooperation also builds on Morocco’s broader defense partnerships with international allies and its growing engagement in initiatives aimed at promoting regional security, stability and professional military capabilities across Africa.
