Saint-Pierre-Et-Miquelon, September 21, 2026 – The Europe Today: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and French President Emmanuel Macron have called for closer cooperation between leading artificial intelligence powers to promote the safe and responsible development of the technology.
Speaking alongside Macron during his visit to the French overseas territory of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, Carney said Canada, France, the United States and China should work together to ensure that artificial intelligence is properly regulated and remains safe and effective.
“We must join forces to ensure adequate regulation and ensure that AI is safe and effective,” Carney said.
The remarks followed discussions between the Canadian and French leaders on strengthening bilateral and transatlantic cooperation. According to the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders emphasized that countries at the forefront of artificial intelligence development, including Canada and France, need to collaborate on the responsible development of emerging technologies.
Carney also highlighted Canada’s role as a reliable partner in the responsible development of emerging technologies, while the two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in strategic areas including defence, aerospace, space infrastructure, energy security and emerging technologies.
During his recent address to the European Parliament, Carney had also proposed closer Canada-EU cooperation on AI safety protocols, common standards and transparency. He said Canada and Europe could work together to develop safeguards while promoting practical applications of artificial intelligence for governments and businesses.
The discussions come amid growing international efforts to establish common approaches to AI safety, regulation and responsible innovation. Canada and France have both emphasized the importance of international cooperation as artificial intelligence develops rapidly and becomes increasingly integrated into economic, governmental and technological activities.
Carney and Macron also discussed wider geopolitical issues, including European and transatlantic security, Ukraine, the Middle East and the Arctic, as well as cooperation on energy security and economic resilience.
