Bangkok, September 12, 2024, The Europe Today: Chiang Rai, the economic hub of Thailand’s northernmost province, is grappling with severe flooding as the Kok River continues to overflow, causing water levels to rise to waist-deep in some areas. Officials have closed key roads and bridges in Muang district, severely affecting access to critical locations, including Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport, the five-way Pho Khun intersection, and the provincial hall.
Evacuations began late Wednesday as residents were forced to leave their homes due to the fast-moving floodwaters. Jet skis were deployed to assist in the evacuation of those trapped by the strong currents.
Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport remains operational, though several airlines, including Vietjet Air and Lion Air, have cancelled all flights on Thursday. Passengers affected by the cancellations have been offered the option to change flight dates without any additional fees. Travellers are advised to use an alternate entrance near the airport’s meteorological station as the main entrance is inaccessible due to flooding.
Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital in Muang district announced that it is only treating emergency cases as the flood situation worsens.
Muang district is one of six districts affected by the floods, along with Chiang Khong, Chiang Saen, Mae Chan, Mae Fah Luang, and Mae Sai. Over 10,000 households have been impacted, and three fatalities have been reported in Mae Fah Luang district.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents to follow evacuation orders and stay safe as floodwaters show no signs of receding.
