Anwar Ibrahim Announces RM50 Million Allocation for Flood Recovery

Petaling Jaya, December 01, 2024 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an additional allocation of RM25 million each for Kelantan and Terengganu to repair essential infrastructure damaged by the recent floods, bringing the total allocation to RM50 million.

In addition to the infrastructure funding, Anwar confirmed that the government would provide special financial assistance of RM500 to over 14,000 civil servants in Terengganu, totaling RM7.4 million in aid. Despite the worsening flood situation, the Prime Minister emphasized that there was no immediate need to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas.

Anwar arrived in Kuala Terengganu on Sunday morning to personally assess the flood impact and engage with affected residents. He landed at Sultan Mahmud International Airport at 10:25 AM, where he was welcomed by Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. The Prime Minister visited temporary relief centers at Sekolah Kebangsaan Telaga Papan and Sekolah Kebangsaan Mangkok in Setiu, where he spoke with flood victims and observed the ongoing recovery efforts.

As of this morning, the number of flood victims in Terengganu has risen to 43,281, up from 41,409 the previous night. These victims, comprising 11,679 families, are being sheltered at 305 relief centers across the state’s eight affected districts. Besut has recorded the highest number of flood victims with 16,084, followed by Hulu Terengganu (7,080), Dungun (6,470), Setiu (6,332), Kuala Terengganu (2,940), Kuala Nerus (2,307), Kemaman (1,230), and Marang (775).

Additionally, as of 8:15 AM, 12 river water level monitoring stations across the state have recorded dangerous water levels. These stations are located in Hulu Terengganu (four), Dungun (three), Kuala Nerus (two), and one each in Kemaman, Marang, and Setiu.

The government’s swift response and ongoing support aim to alleviate the impact of the floods on affected communities while facilitating the recovery of critical infrastructure.
