UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution on Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia at Turkmenistan’s Initiative

Ashgabat, December 7, 2024 – The Europe Today: The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution titled “Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia”, initiated by Turkmenistan. This milestone was celebrated as a significant achievement of the country’s commitment to global peace and security.

Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received heartfelt congratulations from the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, for spearheading this historic initiative.

In his congratulatory message, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized the resolution’s importance, coinciding with the “Treasury of the Mind of Magtymguly Fragi” year and the upcoming celebration of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality. He praised President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s leadership in enhancing the nation’s international stature and advancing its peace-oriented principles.

Highlighting Turkmenistan’s unwavering commitment to neutrality, good neighborliness, and global partnership, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stated, “Your humane foreign policy has elevated the legal status of Turkmen neutrality to a new qualitative dimension, strengthening its role in the region and on the global stage.”

The resolution reinforces Turkmenistan’s dedication to peace and security, with notable contributions such as facilitating regional stability, supporting Afghanistan’s humanitarian and economic development, and fostering international cooperation. The Halk Maslakhaty chairman also underscored the establishment of the Group of Friends of Neutrality for Peace, Security, and Sustainable Development, a platform reflecting Turkmenistan’s diplomatic commitment.

This initiative follows another significant achievement in October, when the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution “Central Asia – a Zone of Peace, Trust, and Cooperation”, also proposed by Turkmenistan. These resolutions reflect the success of the country’s “open door” foreign policy and its leadership in promoting regional harmony.

The UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, based in Ashgabat, was also lauded for its efforts, including organizing dialogues and forums that strengthen ties among the five Central Asian nations.

President Berdimuhamedov expressed his gratitude for the international support received at the UN and reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s dedication to fostering global peace, trust, and development. Turkmenistan’s initiatives continue to highlight the strategic importance of neutrality as a cornerstone of its foreign policy.
