Jakarta, January 7, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia has officially joined BRICS as a full member, marking a significant step in its global engagement strategy. The Indonesian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that the country is fully committed to contributing actively to the organization’s agenda, particularly in the areas of economic resilience, technology cooperation, and sustainable development.
“As a country with an ever-growing and diverse economy, Indonesia is committed to actively contributing to the BRICS agenda on economic resilience, technology cooperation, and sustainable development,” the Foreign Ministry stated.
Indonesia aims to leverage its membership to address global challenges, including climate change, food security, and public health, while promoting an inclusive and equitable global order. The country also emphasized its dedication to fostering collaboration among BRICS members and other nations to build a peaceful and prosperous world.
The Foreign Ministry described Indonesia’s accession to BRICS as a strategic milestone for enhancing South-South cooperation and ensuring that the aspirations of the Global South are represented in global decision-making processes.
“Indonesia views its BRICS membership as a strategic step to enhance collaboration and cooperation with developing countries based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development,” the ministry noted.
In acknowledging its membership, Indonesia expressed gratitude to Russia for its leadership as the 2024 BRICS chair and to Brazil, which will assume the role in 2025. Indonesia pledged to contribute constructively to various BRICS initiatives that align with its constitutional values and the interests of the global community.
Brazil, in its press release, congratulated Indonesia on its accession and recognized the country’s support for priority issues during its 2025 chairmanship.
