Baku, January 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: The First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, shared a heartfelt message on her social media accounts to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 20 January tragedy.
In her post, Mehriban Aliyeva honored the memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic events of 1990, expressing deep respect for their sacrifice.
“I honor the cherished memory of the innocent victims of the 20 January tragedy with deep respect. May Allah rest the souls of all our martyrs in peace!” the post read.

The 20 January tragedy, often referred to as “Black January,” marked a pivotal moment in Azerbaijan’s history when Soviet troops brutally suppressed peaceful demonstrations in Baku, resulting in the deaths of over 140 civilians and injuries to hundreds more. The day is widely regarded as a symbol of resilience and the struggle for Azerbaijan’s independence.
