Putin Open to Talks with Trump on Nuclear Disarmament, Kremlin Says

Moscow, January 24, 2025 – The Europe Today: Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared to engage in talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on a range of issues, including nuclear disarmament, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced during a press briefing in Moscow on Friday.

“The Kremlin is waiting for signals from Washington,” Peskov stated. “Putin is ready; we are waiting for signals, everyone is prepared. Speculation beyond that point is futile. As soon as there is anything concrete, we will inform you.”

Peskov emphasized Moscow’s willingness to negotiate on nuclear disarmament but underscored the necessity of including the nuclear arsenals of U.S. allies, Britain and France, in any discussions.

“In the interest of global stability and the welfare of our nations, we are keen to begin this negotiation process as soon as possible,” Peskov said. “However, current realities require that all nuclear potentials, including those of France and Britain, be considered. Ignoring these capabilities in the dialogue is no longer feasible.”

The Kremlin spokesperson criticized the United States for undermining the arms control framework by withdrawing from international agreements, resulting in what he described as a significant setback for nuclear disarmament efforts.

“The legal framework governing arms control has been severely undermined, and not by Russia’s fault. The U.S. ended its participation in international agreements, effectively dismantling this framework,” Peskov remarked.

Oil Prices and the Ukraine Conflict

Responding to President Trump’s suggestion that lower oil prices could contribute to resolving the conflict in Ukraine, Peskov dismissed the claim as unrelated to the underlying issues.

“This conflict stems from threats to Russia’s national security, the safety of Russians living in specific territories, and the refusal of Americans and Europeans to address Russia’s concerns. Oil prices have no bearing on this,” he said.

Zelenskyy’s Peace Talks

Regarding reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is ready for peace talks with Russia, Peskov rejected the claims, citing Zelenskyy’s legal prohibition of negotiations with Moscow.

“Such claims are unfounded,” Peskov stated. “Zelenskyy has legally prohibited negotiations with Moscow, which contradicts any declarations of readiness for peace.”

The Kremlin’s statements reflect its continued insistence on addressing broader geopolitical concerns while highlighting the challenges of restarting substantive dialogue with the United States on critical global issues.
