Beijing, March 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: China’s electric bicycle trade-in program has witnessed strong momentum in early 2025, with over 1 million vehicles exchanged in January and February, the Ministry of Commerce reported on Monday.
During the first two months of the year, approximately 1.019 million e-bikes were traded in, generating new vehicle sales worth 2.66 billion yuan (around 370 million U.S. dollars). The program has facilitated the trade-in of 2.4 million old e-bikes since its launch last year, contributing to an overall sales revenue of 6.4 billion yuan.
The initiative gained further traction after five government departments, including the Ministry of Commerce, extended the program through a joint notice in January. Currently, over 40,000 retail outlets, primarily small businesses, are participating in the scheme, reflecting growing market enthusiasm.
In February alone, the program achieved a record-breaking performance, with 863,000 e-bikes traded in, surpassing last year’s highest monthly figure of 732,000 units. The continued growth signals increased consumer interest and nationwide adoption of the initiative.
The Ministry of Commerce reaffirmed its commitment to the program, emphasizing its role in stimulating consumption, supporting sustainable development, and benefiting consumers.
Additionally, in January 2025, China expanded its broader consumer goods trade-in program, increasing the number of home appliance categories eligible for government subsidies from eight to 12. Consumers can now receive subsidies of up to 500 yuan per purchase on digital products, such as mobile phones, as part of efforts to boost domestic demand and drive economic growth.
