Ashgabat, March 24, 2025 – The Europe Today: The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution on the “Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan,” reaffirming the country’s commitment to peace and diplomacy, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry announced.
The resolution was passed by consensus during the 61st plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly under the agenda item “Peacebuilding and Peacekeeping” and was co-sponsored by 67 member states.
Presenting the resolution, Aksoltan Atayeva, Turkmenistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, underscored that neutrality is the cornerstone of the nation’s foreign policy and the foundation of its peacekeeping doctrine on the global stage.
The resolution highlights the importance of neutral states in facilitating peace negotiations, acknowledging Turkmenistan’s longstanding efforts in preventive diplomacy at both regional and international levels. Since the adoption of its first resolution on permanent neutrality on December 12, 1995, the country has actively contributed to global peace initiatives.
Atayeva emphasized that Turkmenistan’s neutral status is enshrined in its Constitutional Law and reflects the country’s historical heritage and traditions, which prioritize peace, dialogue, and mutual respect.
The practical application of this policy is evident through initiatives such as the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, headquartered in Ashgabat, and the establishment of the Zone of Peace and Confidence in Central Asia.
Turkmenistan has played a key role in promoting neutrality within the UN framework. In 2017, the UN General Assembly, at Turkmenistan’s initiative, declared December 12 as the International Day of Neutrality. Additionally, the Group of Friends of Neutrality was created within the UN, and this year has been marked by significant activities under the International Year of Peace and Trust.
The adoption of this resolution reaffirms the global recognition of Turkmenistan’s commitment to neutrality and its role as a key contributor to international peace and stability.
