Jakarta, June 20, 2026 – The Europe Today: Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration has deployed 306 automated immigration gates at airports and seaports across the country as part of a nationwide modernization drive aimed at accelerating passenger processing, enhancing transparency, and reducing opportunities for corruption.
Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko said on Friday that the autogate system reflects the government’s commitment to providing faster, more efficient, and user-friendly immigration services for both Indonesian citizens and international travelers.
“Under the spirit of Immigration for the People, autogates demonstrate transparent services, free from illegal levies, while providing maximum convenience for citizens and international travelers entering Indonesia,” Hendarsam said.
He noted that the automated system removes the need for manual document handovers between travelers and immigration officers, thereby minimizing the risk of unauthorized fees and improving service integrity at border checkpoints.
According to Hendarsam, the fully automated passport and biometric verification process enables immigration clearance to be completed within approximately 15 to 20 seconds per traveler, significantly reducing waiting times.
Of the 306 autogates currently in operation, 288 have been installed at airport immigration checkpoints, while 18 are operating at seaport facilities across 11 international entry points nationwide.
The immigration chief welcomed positive feedback from Indonesia’s Ombudsman following an inspection of immigration services at Batam Center Ferry Terminal in the Riau Islands on Thursday. During the visit, Ombudsman officials noted that the installation of additional autogates at Batam Center International Terminal would help ease passenger congestion and improve service quality at one of the country’s busiest international gateways.
Responding to the assessment, Hendarsam emphasized that enhanced infrastructure not only improves operational efficiency but also reduces the risk of misconduct and abuse of authority by individual officers.
He further highlighted that the autogate system is directly integrated with national watchlist databases and Interpol records, strengthening border security and enabling real-time screening of travelers.
The technology utilizes facial recognition to instantly verify travel documents and automatically block individuals listed on security watchlists or those with criminal records, ensuring a more secure and reliable immigration process.
Hendarsam said public acceptance of automated immigration services continues to grow, with autogates now handling approximately 63 to 64 percent of all travelers passing through major immigration checkpoints.
He added that ongoing modernization efforts are essential to maintaining service quality amid steadily increasing international passenger traffic.
The Directorate General of Immigration plans to expand the autogate network further in 2026 by installing additional units at airports and seaports across Indonesia to accommodate rising travel demand and further enhance border processing efficiency.
